Smart Savings - Promocodes.com

Here at Promocodes.com, we take very seriously our goal of bringing you the best bargains and secrets to save. Given that deals and coupons that seem too good to be true are just par for the course, I cannot overstate the value of a reliable review site. When it comes to being a truly savvy shopper, finding reliable information on products and services is just as important as pouncing on a good deal when you get the chance. With that in mind, let’s discuss some of the review sites that we feel are doing a particularly good job of providing valuable, unbiased information on everything from entertainment to employment.

**Yelp!**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/Yelp.jpg)

When speaking about sources for customer reviews, [Yelp](https://www.yelp.com/) is likely the first one that pops into your head and with good reason. The name has basically become synonymous with leaving an online review, much in the same way ‘googling’ has come to replace ‘looking up’ in many of our vocabularies. The impact that Yelp can have on the standing of a company is unmatched by any other third party review, especially in the case of small businesses. What is great about Yelp is the fact that it has reviews for almost anything you can think of. While most people associate the site with [restaurant reviews](https://www.promocodes.com/restaurant-com-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=our-favorite-review-sites), that is no longer even the largest category. As of 2011, the most heavily populated category of business review has actually been shopping. What is refreshing about Yelp is their continued commitment to trustworthy reviews, as they discourage establishments from coercing good reviews out of customers. They opt for quality over quantity in their reviews, stating “We don’t believe that our customers necessarily want to be seen as a promotional vehicle.”

**Activity Hero**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/ActivityHero.jpg)

One uniquely useful site that we have grown to love is [Activity Hero](https://www.activityhero.com/). Activity Hero was created in order to make it easier to find safe, developmentally enriching activities for parents to get their children involved in. The self-described “two and a half moms” who founded of the company did so in response to the real issues they faced finding quality entertainment for their children. As soon as you visit the Activity Hero site, you are automatically directed to reviews for things to do in your area. The site features reviews by site staff, as well as user submitted reviews. Activities are divided into categories, with very helpful and comprehensive reviews tailored to mothers. In addition to reviews, the website also offers suggestions for things to do in your area, as well as coupons, deals and discounts. Activity Hero is an invaluable resource to parent who want to make sure their child gets the most out of their free time.

**Beer Advocate**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/BeerAdvocate.png)

A small batch craft beer is the perfect accessory for that handle bar [mustache](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/mo-staches-less-problems) you are rocking for Movember. Unfortunately, with so many options to choose from, it is easy to get lost amongst the myriad of moonshines and microbrews. Luckily, the only things hipsters love more than small batch brews is giving their opinion of them. Thus, we get [Beer Advocate](https://www.beeradvocate.com/). Beer Advocate has all the information you could possibly need for finding a beer that is right for you. The site has a top 250 beers list and surprisingly insightful reviews of microbrews from all over, which feature pertinent stats about the beverage such as its ABV, style, brewery, and even the type of glass out of which it was consumed. Don’t panic if you already feel in over your head, Beer Advocate also features a Beer 101 section with articles on everything you need to sound like a real ‘brewdie.’

**Glass Door**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/glassdoor.jpg)

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received regarding interviews is to approach them from the point of view of a customer. Realize that the company should be making itself as appealing to you as you are doing for it. This is the philosophy behind [Glass Door](https://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm), which is helping flip the dynamics of interviews on its ear. The website features reviews of companies by past and present employees. These reviews are comprehensive, and include the pros and cons of working for the company, advice for management, approval rating of the company and its CEO, and even a synopsis of the interview experience. The authenticity of getting information directly from employees gives Glass Door a uniquely insightful edge, and can give you that same advantage at your next interview.

**TripAdvisor Deals**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/TripAdvisor.png)

One of the most trusted names in online reviews is [TripAdvisor](https://www.promocodes.com/tripadvisor-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=our-favorite-review-sites). TripAdvisor is the largest travel site according to comScore Media Metrix, featuring over 190 million reviews from 45 countries worldwide. These reviews cover over 4.4 million accommodations, restaurants, and attractions. With so many reviews from around the world, TripAdvisor has the ability to bring you a uniquely local experience no matter how far from home you are. After all, there would be no bigger crime than to travel all the way to Italy just to end up eating at a [Pizza Hut](https://www.promocodes.com/pizza-hut-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=our-favorite-review-sites). One of our own staffers relied on TripAdvisor this summer to find authentic local eateries as she traveled through Europe. One of these restaurants was Pane & Toscana, a delightfully tiny establishment that might have been looked over if it weren’t for its glimmering reviews on TripAdvisor. The page ranks the hole-in-the-wall as the #11 eatery out of nearly 2000 in Florence, and displays its 2014 Certificate of Excellence as well as a price guide and description, as well as glowing comments like, “I'm still thinking about the wild boar, spiced pecorino and blueberry jam sandwich over a week after getting home! “ The travel site’s global reach make it vital resource not only for travelers, but savvy shoppers and ever business professionals trying to tracks industry trends.

With the overwhelming plethora of online reviews, the key is to find which reviews fit your specific criteria. And when you find a site you like, be sure to contribute your own reviews to keep the cycle working.

Our Favorite Review Sites

Here at Promocodes.com, we take very seriously our goal of bringing you the best bargains and secrets to save. Given that deals and coupons that seem too good to be true are just par for the course, I cannot overstate the value of a reliable review site. When it comes to being a truly savvy shopper, finding reliable information on products and services is just as important as pouncing on a good deal when you get the chance.

We all know that it is important to conserve energy. Whether you are an environmentally conscious Planeteer who wants to preserve Mother Nature, or you are just a frugal penny-pincher watching your own bottom line, we all understand the importance of developing habits to avoid wasting energy. And while many of us take steps to make sure we are not being wasteful with electricity in our daily routines, very few consider our energy efficiency while we sleep. Here are a few helpful hints to literally cut down your energy bill while you sleep!

**Night Bright**

It may come as no surprise that I am one of those people who have to have the television on to fall asleep. And while nearly 61% of American’s share this bad habit according to LG Electronics, there is a simple solution that can save our wallets while not leaving us in the dark: remember to set the sleep timer as you are lying down. This idea can also be useful if you are someone who sleeps with a nightlight. Consider investing in a motion sensor or timer for your light, so that it will turn off shortly after you fall asleep.

**Sleeping Device**

Just because a device is in ‘sleep’ or ‘hibernation’ mode, does not mean it’s not using energy. In fact, certain devices are notorious energy fiends in sleep mode. These ‘vampire electronics’ include this like printers, DVD players, game consoles, and particularly desktop computers. It is estimated that $2.8 billion worth of energy is wasted annually by desktop computers be left on at work after employees have gone home for the day. These devices draw constant power as long as they are plugged in, so the best solution is simply to unplug them when they are not in use.

**Charge!**

Plugging your phone in to charge is part of almost every person’s nightly routine, which is why most of us have our phone charger within arm’s reach of our bed. But two hours after you fall asleep, your phone is fully charged and spends the next 6 hours needlessly sucking energy. The same principle applies to your laptop when you let it charge overnight. Consider investing in a charger that automatically shuts off after your device is charged.

**The Heat of the Night**

Especially during summer, it can be hard to keep cool at night. Try to avoid leaving the fan on overnight. And if the cooler night air still leaves you high and dry, use the lowest setting on the fan. If you use air conditioning to maintain the temperature in your house, install a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to cool the house around your schedule, choose a temperature to maintain, and you can set it to not come on during the night.

While some of these energy savings tips may seem small, they will add up to extra cash in your pocket and a little more energy to go around. It is a chance for you to help save the planet and earn some extra money from the comfort of your bed!

Save Money While You Sleep

We all know that it is important to conserve energy and understand the importance of developing habits to avoid wasting energy. Here are a few helpful hints to literally cut down your energy bill while you sleep!

A hot trend recently is ‘subscription box’ services. These services aim to make your lives easier by delivering some of the necessities right to your home each month. Companies offer products in a diverse range of categories, anywhere from fashion to hygiene to pet care. Here are just a few of the subscription box services you need to make sure you are taking advantage of.

**Grooming**

BirchBox is one of the longest running subscription box services. They have packages for both men and women, which include travel-size portions of high-end beauty supplies, grooming tools, and lifestyle accessories such as bracelets and headphones. You also have the ability to preview the upcoming month’s items, and decide exactly which products you want in your box. Glossybox offers a similar service, however they deal exclusively in luxury brands. For $21.00 a month, Glossybox will put together a package of five deluxe-sized cosmetics to be delivered to you. This is a great way to look and feel like a million bucks, without having to spend it. **For Him**

A great service aimed specifically for men is [Dollar Shave Club](https://www.promocodes.com/dollar-shave-club-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=think-inside-the-box), which seeks to cut down the outrageous cost of maintaining your facial hair. The company provides each of its subscribers with a razor handle, as well as a cartridge of razor blades every month. And just as the name suggests, they actually have packages starting at just $1 a month! The company also makes it easy to customize your monthly kit by adding shaving accessories, such as shave butter and aftershave. Whether you shave once a week, or your 5 o’clock shadow shows up at noon, you can’t afford to not take advantage of this service.

**Eats**

After a long day of work leaves you hungry and tired, the last thing you want to do is push a squeaky-wheeled shopping cart through the grocery store. HelloFresh is a subscription box that provides you with all of the ingredients and instructions you will need for 3 delicious and nutritious meals. A sharing economy is a caring economy, and one that saves. Luckily, the web has made it possible for perfect strangers to share nearly everything, including clothes and cars. And with sharing comes tremendous financial benefits.

Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can share and split the cost.

**Tools**

Let’s face it—unless you’re a professional craftsman, odds are you aren’t going to need tools that often. Only occasionally will you need a socket wrench, a heavy-duty drill, or a pair of needle-nose pliers. I was surprised to learn that Seattle has multiple “lending libraries” exclusively for tools. In fact, lending libraries exist in 26 states.

How do they operate? Tool libraries receive donations from the community and in turn lend them to those in need. It’s free, easy and virtually the same as a traditional library.

The next time you have a [home improvement project](https://www.promocodes.com/build-com-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=sharing-is-saving-6-things-you-should-always-split-the-cost) on your to-do list, check to see if a tool library is available to you. There’s even [a website](https://localtools.org/find/) you can use to search for them in your area.

**Cellular Plans**

Sprint brought the convenience of family plans to the mainstream with its “Framily” campaign in 2013. Though, they recently changed to the “Sprint Family Share Pack,” which awesomely offers four lines in one for $160 a month. The average person spends [$71](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/5-mobile-plans-cheaper-than-your-current-monthly) on their monthly cellular bill, so this is significantly cost-effective.

There’s also the AT&T Mobile Share Value Plan which saves users $15 to $25, depending on gigabyte preference. At T-Mobile, a group can share six lines and pay only $120—which, for $20 each, is quite the steal.

If you have a group of friends or relatives (or even strangers) willing to share a plan with you, you can save hundreds each year.

**Streaming Services**

It’s never wise to needlessly spend on luxuries when you can share them. The same goes for streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and iTunes. Netflix unveiled its four-stream plan in 2013, permitting subscribers to play the same media simultaneously from different devices with the same account. So, that’s $3 each per month to access Netflix’s sprawling library.

And while it may be illegal to stream HBO Go from another device, that doesn’t usually stop people from doing it. There are many other [streaming services](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/7-cheaper-alternatives-to-netflix) aside from Netflix that let users share: Hulu Plus allows multiple-device support (though you can’t stream the same title simultaneously) and iTunes allows 10 devices/computers to access the same content at the same time.

Even Amazon Prime is available for multiple users, which begs the question: Why not share?

**Living Spaces**

You’ve probably noticed a surge in the popularity of swapping living spaces, which yield great savings. Sites like [HomeExchange.com](https://www.promocodes.com/home-exchange-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=sharing-is-saving-6-things-you-should-always-split-the-cost), [AirBnB.com](https://www.promocodes.com/airbnb-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=sharing-is-saving-6-things-you-should-always-split-the-cost), and Intervac have made it possible for people to rent out rooms (or entire homes) to travelers. My mother, for example, is an Airbnb.com fanatic, and she makes extra money on the weekends because she rents out her Santa Cruz home. She has been glowing about its ease and lucrativeness since she joined a few months ago. And she always has a new story when I see her.

Seniors are especially fond of home swapping, asserting it’s an ideal arrangement due to its cost-saving benefits as well as companionship. Reports of vandalism and theft—the two biggest concerns about home swapping—are exceedingly rare.

Considering the US housing crisis and exceptionally high costs of living these days, it makes sense to look into it as an alternative income stream.

**Clothes**

Yes, clothes—really. The concept of gift economics plays a part in the niche market of clothing exchange. Sites such as thredUP and Freecycle represent the vanguard, offering the ability to sell and swap items via mail.

At [thredUP](https://www.promocodes.com/thredup-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=sharing-is-saving-6-things-you-should-always-split-the-cost), one can sell clothes for cash or shop discounted brands up to 90 percent off. You can also swap clothes. Its users regularly earn 80 percent of the selling price. If you didn’t think it could get any better than thrift shops, think again.

The Freecycle Network, a website composed of nearly 8 million members, goes by the philosophy that it’s better to recycle than to simply cast into a landfill. Although it’s slightly tougher to navigate than, say, Craigslist, a few clicks usually gets you free items you need. I was able to locate a person giving away five designer T-shirts in my area. If I actually wanted them, I’d immediately contact the seller and have a few new cool additions to my closet.

**Cars**

It seems a day doesn’t pass without a new ride-sharing service hitting the news. And why not? [Gas prices](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/10-simple-tricks-to-save-money-on-gas) are the highest they’ve ever been and insurance is a pain in the neck for almost everyone. According to AAA, the average person spends $9,641 a year for the privilege of driving.

If you’re fed up with the costs of driving, there’s an alternative: Cue [Zipcar](https://www.promocodes.com/zipcar-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=sharing-is-saving-6-things-you-should-always-split-the-cost), one example of ride-sharing. After one small membership fee, Zipcar users can access thousands of cars around the world. You can use them only when you need them. Zipcar alone can save you hundreds a year because you will only drive when necessary.

Other car-sharing programs include WhipCar, Spride Share and RelayRides—all with the purpose of making transportation a lot cheaper.

So the next time you think about paying full-price without exhausting the option of potentially splitting the cost with another, you’re only stealing money from your own pocket. Sharing is caring, but it’s also fiscally wise.

Sharing is Saving: 6 Things You Should Always Split the Cost

Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can share and split the cost. You can share nearly everything, including clothes and cars. And with sharing comes tremendous financial benefits.

Owning a dog is one of life’s most enjoyable and rewarding experiences. However, the heavy costs can cut into that enjoyment. The annual cost for a dog is anywhere from $580 to $875 and with an average lifespan of 12 years, that’s some considerable spending.

It’s National Dog Day, a day in which we show our appreciation for our precious four-legged babies. But since your wallet is primarily to thank, I believe it’s due time to go over some [cost-saving tips for making your pet healthy](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/chew-cost-saving-tips-keep-four-legged-family-in-kibble) and happy at the lowest price possible. **What does it cost to own a dog?**

The start of a dog’s life requires hefty spending. The purchasing price of a purebred runs anywhere from $500 to $2,000. Initial vet costs to neuter and spay costs $50 to $100. Adding puppy vaccinations and fecal exams and preventative medication to the mix could jolt your expenditures to $700 in the first few months. This is all so sad for your pocket book, so let’s jump into the savings advice.

It’s a tiny industry, but an industry whose participants see a bright future in it.

The pay-what-you-want business model, or PWYW, has slowly made its way into ecommerce. Normally, the only way to negotiate for a better price is in person, whether for buying a new car, a new home, or even a new dress. But stores like [Greentoe](https://www.greentoe.com/) are blazing the path for a new kind of haggling—one that allows you to state your price and have it. Period.

In most businesses, products and services are perishable. That is, they expire, which is a money-sucker for companies. Businesses in the entertainment industry, for example, often see profits dwindle when tickets go unsold. Likewise, hotels and airlines see vacancies on a daily basis. Websites that adopt an auction-based system can sometimes act as the saving grace for companies in these sectors. And it’s the consumer who benefits. Here are a few websites that let you name your own price, no funny business involved.

#####

**Pay What You Want**

The stroke of genius to create Greentoe came after founder Andrew Kurland was shopping on Amazon. He noticed the biggest retailers tend to have the same prices on products because they can afford to sell at the same low rates. So, Kurland thought, **why can’t consumers post a price they’d be willing to pay and have these retailers compete for their business individually?**

At Greentoe, you can post the price you want for TVs, appliances, cameras, musical instruments, baby products and more. Greentoe then notifies its network of stores that there is someone willing to pay a certain amount for a product they sell. If the price is within reason, the item ships from whichever retailer wants to sell.

**Greentoe sells items 18 to 22 percent less than top ten retailers, and 7 to 12 percent less than Amazon.** Shipping and tax is included. Greentoe doesn’t publicize the retailers in their network because the retailers don’t want to disclose that they sell for a lower price somewhere other than their website.

How can a site like Greentoe.com save you money? **It’s virtual haggling.** You set the price you want and with a little bit of luck, reliable sellers agree and send the item your way. Like many pioneers in the field of ecommerce, the success of Greentoe depends on the success of its users.

If you purchased a new Nikon digital camera for a price well below the price available at Best Buy, wouldn’t you consider that a success?

A seat at a live event is a perishable product. It’s a shame for everyone involved—owners, players, sponsors, vendors—when a venue fails to sell tickets. CEO of ScoreBig Adam Kanner estimates that 40 percent of the market goes unsold each year; a $25 billion industry loses $10 in potential sales.

[ScoreBig](https://www.promocodes.com/scorebig-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=pay-what-you-want) takes the same auction model as Greentoe and brings it to the ticket industry. **Purchasers can bid on tickets and save as much as 60 percent.** The process is simple: How many tickets? Where do you want to sit? And what do you want to pay? ScoreBig will immediately notify you whether your bid is accepted or not.

The reason ScoreBig is able to sell [tickets to sports, theater, and concert events](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/tickets?ref=blog&ref_post=pay-what-you-want) cheaper than competitors is because they purchase tickets in bulk from brokers, teams, venues and other sources. This also allows them to avoid charging users for exorbitant processing and shipping fees.

_Hint:_ Choosing general seating often yields the best deals because it gives ScoreBig the most flexibility.

**![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/Pricelineeeee.png)**

What can we say about [Priceline](https://www.promocodes.com/priceline-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=pay-what-you-want) that William Shatner hasn’t already said? Like ScoreBig, **they work with a network of partners who routinely have unsold inventory. (Forty percent of rooms go unused every night, per Priceline.)** And since no one likes vacancies, these partners accept bids from travelers looking to score cheap deals on flights, hotels and rental cars. _Jaunted_ published an interesting anecdote verifying Priceline’s Name Your Own Price policy, which got them a Delta flight for half the price.

People who use Priceline must be flexible when it comes to airlines and flight times; otherwise, Priceline’s partners get less flexible. Considering Priceline’s monopoly on the name-your-price travel market, they are likely the best bet when it comes to securing discounted travel options that aren’t publically displayed on deal aggregator sites such as [Expedia](https://www.promocodes.com/expedia-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=pay-what-you-want) and [Travelocity](https://www.promocodes.com/travelocity-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=pay-what-you-want).

Do you see the pay-what-you-want business model taking off in the future? And how was your experience with these websites?

These 3 Websites (Legitimately) Let You Pay What You Want

Here are a few websites that let you pay what you want, no funny business involved. Stores like Greentoe, ScoreBig, and Priceline allows you to state your price and have it.

These 3 Websites Legitimately Let You Pay What You Want

When you are surrounded by a bunch of 18-year-olds who do not nag you to do homework or peak at your computer screen, you start spending. Since nobody is there to monitor your wallet and tell you whether you are getting a good deal or not, you end up overpaying during the first semester. Do not be a victim by learning the five easiest money traps that first-year students suffer.

**1\. Dining out**

Some institutions make it a strict rule for all incoming students to buy meal plans. As a result, many grow tired of the leftover-tasting cafeteria food and start dining out. Those without meal plans tend to eat out all the time. While it may not seem so expensive at first, the costs will accumulate and soon it will be the biggest budget-eating factor of your year.

Solution: Stick to the meal plan. Endure it. Just think about a year of bad food. Also, plenty of organizations and events give out free food during the semester, so if you ever need a menu change, become a proactive member of your campus. To those who are not bounded to the school’s dining program, shop and cook.

**2\. Bicycles and long boards**

Many students get excited over bicycles and long boards to get to class. They end up spending $100 to $300 on their new toys, thinking that they will enjoy rolling to lectures on time. Here’s the reality. More than half of the freshmen who get long boards do not know how to ride one. They always end up bumping into upperclassmen and falling one to two times a month. Ironically, bike riders also meet a similar fate despite the fact that most people learned how to ride as kids.

Solution: Unless your classes are far away, don’t ride what you can’t ride. But if you do know how to waltz your wheels, do not purchase bicycles or long boards on campus – particularly in those “inexpensive-looking” independent stands. They trick you into offering you exclusive deals for students, but you will always find cheaper stores off-campus that sell similar models for $30 or more cheaper. Yelp it.

**3\. Student IDs**

During orientation, your RA gave you one of those keychain necklaces to attach your student ID as well as dorm keys. As the semester progresses, you will realize how annoying and ugly those necklaces are. You will abandon them and carry your ID around your pocket. As a result, you’ll lose it and pay $25 to $30 for a piece of plastic with the hideous-looking photo of yourself. Didn’t anyone warn you? Student ID centers take DMV-quality photos.

Solution: Lose the necklace. On your first day. You’re wearing a banner that makes you prone to upperclassmen (ahem, me) who want your meal plan’s guest swipes into the cafeteria. As for ID, always place it into your wallet and no matter how much of a rush you are in, don’t ever put it into your pocket. That’s one of the best ways to lose it.

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/College Life.jpg)

**4\. Water bottles**

Because students are always rushing between classes, they tend to stack up on [water bottles](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/water-bottles?ref=blog&ref_post=5-money-traps-every-college-freshman-should-avoid) that cost up to $5. Even if they [buy in bulk](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/9-surefire-ways-to-save-at-the-grocery-store), water bottles take about $5 to $10 a month. Not to mention that your roommate will take your water bottle at least three times a semester with your permission and fifteen times without it. And he or she will make sure to scrape off the brand’s sticker and squish the bottle, so it becomes unrecognizable.

Solution: [Buy a filter](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/water-filters?ref=blog&ref_post=5-money-traps-every-college-freshman-should-avoid) and get a free bottle from student organizations. Sometimes, off-campus housings give out bottles for promotion. That filter will last during those four years and beyond as well as help you practice a greener lifestyle.

**5\. Items with your school logo**

When you sit in a lecture, only freshmen have notebooks with their school logos on them. A $0.99 notebook is usually priced $5.99 just because it has your school’s logo. Sure, it’s cool to show off your school pride and tell the world that you got accepted to such college. Here’s the problem though. You’re basically with everyone who got accepted to that school and that logo is just everywhere. It’s not that impressive anymore.

Solution: Show school spirit by being a good student, taking advantage of events, learning traditions, and getting involved in your community, BUT not by spending $5 on notebooks. And if not having those words printed on the cover really burns your conscience, draw them. Be the first freshman to engage in DIY logo. Soon, all the football players sitting in the back will join the movement.

Avoid the easiest ways that your freshman budget can slip into the death zone. There will be far more expenses and unexpected events for the next four years that saving every penny will make dramatic difference.

5 Money Traps Every College Freshman Should Avoid

Do not be a victim by learning the five easiest money traps that first-year students suffer. Read our tips and do not overpay during the first semester.

[Some money saving practices](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/best-money-advice-from-today-finance-gurus) seem useful at first; however, if you actually weigh the pros and cons, the price you pay or save is not really worth it. Below are seven techniques that can actually backfire.

**Lifelong warranty**

Changing brake pads usually costs around $120. But some car services may charge you as high as $300 with the promise of a lifelong warranty. Here is the reality: You are not going to be driving that car forever. In the future, job promotions, car breakdowns, random deals, and other life events will happen that may eventually substitute your present wheels. A person switches car every four years and careful drivers do not have to get new brake pads consistently. Avoid buying anything with “life warranty” since you never know whether the business will continue existing or you will be living in the same country.

**BOGO**

“Buy one, get one” free seems tempting, but think before you decide to spend the money. Do you really need that item? Is the second spending really that necessary? When you decide to get the second product, you end up overspending and it takes up more space. BOGO only if the extra addition will actually be useful.

**Price over quality**

Oftentimes, the price tags take control over us to the extent that we overlook the benefits of quality. When you walk into the store for a new pan, do not immediately aim for the cheapest option. Quality plays a crucial role when it comes down to pans and other kitchenware, unlike soap and water bottles. Buying cheap pans can result in tedious scrubbing, health hazards, and constant replacements that will cost more in the long run.

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/saving-money.jpg)

**Coin abstinence in the parking meter**

“Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.” Although this quote is from _Vanilla Sky_, it has truth to it. No matter how short that errand is, one minute is enough for a cop to stop by, write down a ticket, and place it on the window shield. Do not ever practice coin abstinence in the parking meter. It’s better to toss away coins than $50 or $100.

**Bulk binging**

In [warehouses such as Costco](https://www.promocodes.com/costco-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=when-money-saving-practices-backfire), you get a sudden rush and excitement to spend more than your shopping list. The low prices, coupons, and bulky appearances felicitate you for saving money. There are certain products like toilet paper and toothpaste that are worth buying in bulk. But unless you have a family, you need to think twice before purchasing food since they have short expiration dates and end up getting wasted. To those who live alone or with very few people, avoid acquiring raw vegetables, fruits, and short-term lasting foods since you won’t be able to finish before the deadline. More is not always better.

**Buying organic**

Know the meaning behind the term “organic.” Just because an apple is labeled organic doesn’t mean it is chemical-free. The FDA sets a limit on the amount of chemicals that can be used on food for that category; therefore, an organic apple still has chemicals and pesticides. You might as well save a few more bucks by buying normal food since “organic” is just propaganda.

**Prioritizing money over health**

Working overtime, taking night shifts, or another job may seem productive, but the health risks associated to them may accumulate to illnesses later in life. Also, skipping regular checkups and dental cleaning may result in future surgeries or treatments that can cost thousands of dollars. You are earning money to live a stable, healthy life. So spend it on what’s really important.

When Money-Saving Practices Backfire

Some money saving practices seem useful at first; however, if you actually weigh the pros and cons, the price you pay or save is not really worth it. Below are seven techniques that can actually backfire.

Another faux holiday strikes: It’s National Dollar Day. To celebrate this illustrious occasion, we are recommending a slew of common items you should always buy at the [dollar store](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/dollar-stores?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store).

It should never breed uncertainty to purchase [necessary nuisances](https://www.promocodes.com/blog/how-to-save-on-necessary-nuisances) for only a buck because of concerns over quality, because these products are indistinguishable from their marked-up counterparts. These are all things that you can find at the one true dollar store online, [Dollar Tree](https://www.promocodes.com/dollar-tree-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store). Fill up your digital cart and have a frugal spending party for National Dollar Day.

**1\. Party supplies**

Your shopping checklist might generally consist of plastic tumblers, candles, paper plates, and all the things that will serve your guests and make the celebration go swimmingly. Since parties typically last only one day (if you’re averse to benders), then it makes sense to [buy cheap supplies](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/events-and-party-supplies?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store) because you’ll only need them once.

**2\. Paperclips**

They’re only twisted pieces of metal. I don’t believe there are any luxury paperclips available on the market. If so, it’s a silly innovation. Dollar Tree has an 80-pack for a dollar and [Walmart](https://www.promocodes.com/walmart-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store) has a similar pack for $5.97. If you’re a business or simply have a fetish for an abundance of paperclips, visit the Dollar Store.

**3\. Writing utensils**

My roommate bragged to me the other day about having an $80 pen. Frankly, I wasn’t impressed, and I actually felt bad for him. Writing utensils produce the result of jotting down the written language, and it really doesn’t matter how pretty the lettering is. Plus, people write everything on the computer these days. Go to the dollar store.

**4\. Washcloths**

Draped on the oven handle are those lonely and oft-neglected washcloths gathering grime and food morsels and nasty bacteria. Don’t cry for them—that’s their purpose. Dollar Tree has a collection of washcloths of all shapes and colors, and they look exactly like my mother’s. Stock up and save.

**5\. Socks**

The most expensive socks cost $1,600. Not sure why someone would want to spend money on something no one sees. Dollar Tree offers white socks, dress socks, trouser socks, ribbed socks, baby socks and socks, socks. And they all cost $1.

**6\. [Storage containers](https://www.promocodes.com/the-container-store-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store)**

And this includes coin wrappers. There is a hefty inventory of plastic containers at nearly every dollar store, and they all serve the same purpose: to store your crap. No need to have an upscale container for moving your dirty clothes to the laundry machine.

**7\. Pregnancy tests**

What? Yes, it’s true—pregnancy tests at dollar stores are indeed reliable. Why spend [$15 at Target](https://www.promocodes.com/target-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store) when you can shell out a buck and get your results?

**8\. Toothpaste**

My dentist the other day told me “every toothpaste brand is standard.” Meaning, it often doesn’t matter which brand you choose to clean your teeth, a combination of flossing and mouthwash and brushing will yield the best results. The same brand—Crest Anticavity toothpaste—costs roughly $3 more at your neighborhood grocery store than the dollar store.

**9\. Toothbrushes**

If you’re OK going the analog way—simply a handle and some bristles—then why not spend only a dollar? It’s a toothbrush. All of that intricate toothbrush technology is essentially a waste.

**10\. Hand sanitizer**

[Drugstores](https://www.promocodes.com/cvs-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store) sell hand sanitizers for $3. Dollar Tree sells them for $1. Each claim to kill 99 percent of germs. You get the point.

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/Scotties.jpg)

**11\. Tissues**

You blow your nose in them; they aren’t exactly cherished pieces of paper. One box of 120 Scotties brand tissues are just a buck. Stock up for life and pay $20—my estimation for a lifetime supply of tissues.

**12\. Calculators**

They do magical math, and they’re only a dollar at Dollar Tree. Similar models cost upwards of $10 elsewhere.

**13\. Batteries**

[Batteries](https://www.promocodes.com/coupons/batteries?ref=blog&ref_post=national-dollar-day-15-things-you-should-always-buy-at-the-dollar-store) are a constant necessity, and it makes absolutely no sense to spend excessively on them. All batteries serve the same purpose, and very rarely is there a quality discrepancy between two brands. One brand costs a dollar at Dollar Tree and nearly $4 at eBay.

**14\. Screwdrivers**

Yes, at Dollar Tree you can buy a pack of screwdrivers for $1 each. Talk about cost-effective.

**15\. Auto maintenance products**

It’s true, you can find everything from power steering fluid, fuel injector cleaner, brake fluid and more for a dollar each. If you have paranoia about being overcharged at the auto shop, don’t underestimate the power of the dollar store (and your own DIY abilities).

**Membership Sites That Save You Money**

![](https://cdn.promocodes.com/img/upload/Gilt.jpg)

When there are thousands of retail sites offering the same incentives, indistinguishable from one another, it’s inevitable that some might go the experimental route. [Gilt]( https://www.promocodes.com/gilt-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-membership-sites-that-save-you-money) is one of them. It was one of the first websites to offer flash sales for members only. Its more than six million shoppers can find prices **up to 60 percent off retail** on designer clothing styles and tasteful home décor.

Pictured above is your typical comparison between the vendor’s price quote and the price Gilt offers. You must be a member to view the sales, and they usually last 36 hours. How do they do it? Gilt orders extremely discounted merchandise and adds a slight margin to make a profit. Sales start at noon ET every day. If you enjoy wearing tags with the names Kate Spade, Giorgio Brutini or Dolce Vita on them, Gilt is usually your best bet for the lowest prices on designer brands.

The spontaneity is free at [BirchBox](https://www.promocodes.com/birchbox-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-membership-sites-that-save-you-money), but a subscription costs $10. The website puts “discovery” at the top of its business model, sending five beauty, grooming and lifestyle samples to your home every month. When you subscribe, they begin sending you these samples, and you have access to their trendy shop which can score you points. Often, they’ll send you additional free samples with your online purchase.

A lot of products ship for free as well. Simply complete an initial questionnaire and create a profile. Then, the fun will begin. If anything, **you will be receiving “generously sized” free samples every month**—samples from up-and-coming brands which you may have never tried. It’s worth subscribing for the mere fact that it’s like winning a monthly prize in the mail.

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past couple years, you may have heard of [Dollar Shave Club]( https://www.promocodes.com/dollar-shave-club-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-membership-sites-that-save-you-money). The company burst onto the scene after they launched a [YouTube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUG9qYTJMsI) which prompted 12,000 orders in two days. But in all honesty, Michael Dubin’s outlandishly innovative monthly service probably would’ve garnered the same following if the video had never existed. It’s very simple and very cost-effective:

Choose from three different blades, depending on your shaving budget. A sweet compatible handle is complimentary for new members, too. Considering the cost of driving to your local store, buying a marked-up shaving razor, and repeating this process month after month, **one subscription at Dollar Shave Club is essentially a long-term investment in “shaving” money**. Do it.

[Amazon](https://www.promocodes.com/amazon-com-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-membership-sites-that-save-you-money) weaves such an intricate web of savings-geared services it’s impossible to hate the world’s largest online retailer. And that’s rare. Its marquee service, Amazon Prime, offers free shipping and a lion’s share of free media streaming. Other Amazon services include Amazon Mom and Amazon Student.

Amazon Mom is free. Members receive 20 percent off diaper subscriptions with Subscribe & Save and free two-day shipping. They also get access to Prime Instant Video and a $10 credit when they refer someone new. Amazon Student is something I wish I  had in college: with a valid .edu address, students receive **six free months of Amazon Prime**, free shipping, and exclusive access to deals and promotions. Plus, they get a $10 credit if they refer a friend. So, the moral of the story is, subscribe to every one of Amazon’s services if you like saving money.

The target demo for Jetsetter must be retirees with the freedom for impromptu travel. They may be the only ones who can act quickly enough on **Jetsetter’s 40-percent-off flash sales on hotels, homes and tours**. Personally, if I were meandering through my golden years with a penchant for seeing new sights, it’d sign up instantly as a member for free.

Interestingly, it’s an invitation-only travel community, meaning, a membership is contingent on being invited by a current member. Some might think this would stifle business, but it seems to foster a more community-like feel, which is the overall goal of the website. Jetsetter’s app was awarded the best iPhone Travel App in 2011 by Apple Store.

5 Membership Sites That Save You Money

If you’ve ever seen _[Extreme Couponers](https://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/extreme-couponing/)_ on TLC, you probably know it features a merry little band of raving loonies spending upwards of 20 hours a week using intricate [couponing strategies to save](https://www.promocodes.com/coupon-guide/how-to-use-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons). Like you, I don’t have the time for this. The good news is there are simple ways to save a little more by applying a little extra effort and know-how.

If you haven’t heard of stacking coupons, consider this a lesson. Stacking is simply using two or more [coupons](https://www.promocodes.com/?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons) during one purchase. There aren’t very many retailers online that allow you to use more than one _code_, but there are many stores that make it possible for you to use more than one _offer_.

**Stores That Let You Stack Coupons**

**[Kohl’s Coupon Codes](https://www.promocodes.com/kohls-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons)**

Kohl’s is the pack leader when it comes to stacking coupons. There are a number of combinations you can use to your benefit: **You can stack two dollar off coupons together** but you can’t mix two % off coupons together. You can combine a **% off code with a free shipping code**, which usually yields the biggest savings. And, you can stack a **% off code with a dollar off code**. Likewise, Kohl’s Cash is a reward with every purchase. When you reach the checkout page, you will see the fine print describing their stacking codes policy which states “limited two per order.”

**Newegg Coupons**

Do you love to shop for electronics? Newegg has a liberal policy for stacking coupons. It allows customers to use an **unlimited number of codes per order**. The catch is you can only use one code per item. Newegg usually offers discount codes on specific products, so this makes it easy to use multiple codes per transaction. You must be logged in, and newsletter subscribers have access to more promo codes than non-newsletter subscribers.

**[Victoria’s Secret Coupons](https://www.promocodes.com/victorias-secret-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons)**

Printable coupons come in handy most when shopping at Victoria’s Secret. Customers can use up to **three coupons in-store**. This is great because they even allow you to use three % off coupons for every order. Unfortunately, **online shoppers can only use one promo code per order**. Odds are there is a Victoria’s Secret in your area, as well as printable coupons you can find online.

**[Walgreens Coupons](https://www.promocodes.com/walgreens-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons)**

Everyone’s favorite drugstore has a generous stacking policy. Online, **you may use a % off code and meet the minimum purchase requirement of $25 to receive free shipping**. This is the best course to get the biggest savings. When shopping in-store, **Walgreens allows you to use a manufacturer’s coupon in tandem with a store coupon**. What’s the difference between a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon? A manufacturer coupon is a coupon for the specific item, while a store coupon falls under the umbrella of the retailer selling the item. Walgreens also accepts multiple coupons for multiple qualifying items, like grocery stores allow multiple coupons per transaction.

**[Target Coupons](https://www.promocodes.com/target-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=5-online-stores-that-let-you-stack-coupons)**

Target, or as it’s known in the upper echelon of society, _Tar Jhey Outlet_, offers a few ways you can get the most out of your wallet. **REDcard carriers can receive 5% off** every time they buy an item. Moreover, they can receive $5 off orders over $50, which gives potentially nets them 15% off every time. On the occasion that there is a code to use—usually this pertains to one specific item—you can combine all three of these methods to save you some righteous bucks. Shopping online through promocodes.com affords you the possibility of getting 75% off when you shop in clearance while using all of these extra deals.

Redeem these promos as your ticket to the beau monde that our dear Coco built for us.

When it comes to party dresses, women face three dilemmas: first of all, we want what celebs wear; second of all, we do not want to wear something that our frienemies saw us in last time; third of all, we do not want to pay an unreasonable amount for a day outfit. Rent the Runway provides the solution for all of the above. Instead of buying a two-thousand-and-something Vera Wang gown, simply rent it for tens to hundreds of dollars to show it off at your best friend’s party. Also, for those who are going to marry soon, Rent the Runway has a vast selection of bridal dresses. Take [$25 off coupon from your first rental](https://www.promocodes.com/rent-the-runway-coupons?ref=blog&ref_post=designer-clothes-for-less).

Rock that corporate catwalk or impress your friends with envy/flattery-causing icons. It’s all about quietly paying the partial price and boasting the full price.
