Putting the Lids on This Week's Tip Jars: January 10, 2014

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE! We hope that you all stayed warm, wherever you live in the country, and had a fantastic and successful week! We missed out on the crazy weather here in Santa Monica, but we were definitely thinking of everyone as we watched the low temperatures shatter records. If you need something to look forward to, there are 160 days until summer, which will undoubtedly come quicker than you think…at least we hope so! Have a great weekend and don’t forget to get your savvy savings on!

We all understand how easy it is to get in our cars and drive to the grocery store or restaurant a block away. After a long day/week of work, the last thing you probably want to do is spend more time than necessary getting what you need. Think about it terms of the long run though. Not only will you be doing a favor to your overall health, but you will also save money on gas and wear and tear on your car.  Since January is typically about starting fresh and getting back into shape, there is no better time than now to kick the habit of driving everywhere!

We love our sunshine here in Southern California, and aside from making people just a tad happier all the time, it also can do wonders on heating up your rooms. Whether you live somewhere warm or cold, by leaving your shades or curtains open during the day, you will get passive solar heating as long as the sun is out! The Natural Resources Defense Council suggests closing your curtains/blinds once the sun goes down, so you do not loose all of the heat collected throughout the day.

Makeup is fun to buy, try, and fall in love with, but it gets expensive month after month. Luckily there are great recycling programs in place by some of our favorite retailers! MAC Cosmetics allows you to return 6 primary packaging containers in exchange for a free MAC lipstick of your choice.  There are many more companies that have great rewards programs in place for being earth friendly, so look it up before you throw anything out! Also, check out this InStyle article for a few of the brands that have recycling specials in place: http://news.instyle.com/2013/04/22/earth-day-recycle-beauty-products/

We love finding new “green” ways of cleaning the bathroom and getting away from those harsh, expensive chemicals. Although this trick has been around for a while, it is latest obsession of ours. Not only does it remove the grim and dirt that we build up daily, but it also leaves your bathroom smelly unbelievably fresh and clean, which in and of itself is worth it! Check out this Apartment Therapy article about it: How To Clean a Bathtub Naturally with a Grapefruit & Salt.

Just like making dinner at home or packing your own lunch, brewing your own coffee every morning will save you money. Depending on your taste, you are looking at spending between $1.38 and $5.00 on a single cup of coffee. If you drink just one cup a day, you are spending $25 a week and $1,300 a year! With all of the coffee brands and flavor options available, it will be easy to fall into a new routine. This way, when you do want to go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, it can be a special treat!

What are you looking forward to most this weekend?!
