All-Natural DIY Cleaning Solutions: Tips and Tricks

By Shannon Hanrahan  •  July 31, 2015

I think it is a running joke around the office and my apartment that I am always looking for new ways to add all natural products into my daily lifestyle routine. Whether it is beauty products or cleaning products, you can bet that at some point in the week, I am in the kitchen mixing up some new concoction. Now of course, going all-natural isn’t always the least expensive option, but if you do your research and plan correctly then you will find how many excessive products you can eliminate from your house and your weekly shopping trips.

Where to Start With DIY Cleaning

Before you do any purchasing, evaluate what you already have stored around the house. Collect all of the bottles and materials that you use, or more likely don’t use, and put them all together. Once you have everything out, combine the bottles that are duplicates and throw out whatever is essentially empty or worse, already expired. This way you can start fresh once you move on to the homemade life.

DIY Wipes

If you want to start off slow, make DIY cleaning wipes. Those are easy to store away and you can just grab them when you need to. What is also great about wipes is that they can be used for a variety of cleaning activities, therefore you aren’t collecting different products for different rooms in the house.

Popsugar has a fantastic how-to for making wipes that are easily accessible but not obvious to any visitors that might come around. Stylish, convenient, and affordable; all of our favorite things.

Shower Wand

We all know that cleaning after a nice hot shower gets you the best results, and if you didn’t know that, give it a try now. You might be asking why. Well, by steaming the room, you are loosening up all of that grim and dirt building up in your bathroom. This makes your job MUCH easier and saves so much time. If you don’t have time to clean after your showers though or just find that you aren’t cleaning as frequently, keep this all-natural cleaning wand in your shower so you can multi-task! I have had it in my bathroom for over a year and clean every time I shower, so at the end of the week when I clean the bathroom, the shower is a breeze to get through. What is this magic cleaning solution you ask? Just buy a dish soap wand and fill it with equal parts white vinegar and dish soap. If you hang it right in the shower, it is a constant reminder to clean. I like to use this brush in my sink as well because it gets rid of a lot of the rust residue and build up in there too.

All-Natural DIY Rug Refresh

Nothing is worse than a nasty smelling carpet, but do you really want to sprinkle chemicals all over and then be breathing that it all day, every day? I’ve done it in the past, and, believe me, it is not a pleasant experience. So instead of dealing with that, use a natural deodorizer that can be used all over the house and is kid and pet safe! All you need is baking soda and dried herbs of your choice. My signature scent is lavender, so that is what I use, but dried rosemary is also another great option. Then all you have to do is measure out ⅓ to ½ a cup of baking soda and ½ to 1 tsp of your dried herbs in a bowl. You can use the herbs right from the jar or put it in a food processor to chop it more finely. Chopping will enable you to spread your mixture more evenly, but either option will give you the fresh scent you are looking for. Then you can either use a spoon and start gently sprinkling the powder everywhere or you can put it in a shaker, such as an old cheese bottle, and spread it all over. Then just let it sit for 10 minutes to absorb the odor in the carpet and vacuum it up.

Make Your DIY Cleaning Products: Ingredients You'll Need

Whether you want to start with these 3 easy DIY ideas, or create your own, here are a few products you will want in the house:

  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Lemon
  • Dish Soap
  • Essential Oils

With just a few ingredients, you can be set with DIY cleaning products and even some beauty products for months at a time! You can try new recipes and find what works best for your schedule, all the time knowing that you are being environmentally friendly!

I know that not everyone has time to make their own cleaning problems, so if you still want to avoid harsh chemicals but you don't have the time to DIY, I would suggest looking at products from companies such as The Honest Company. Right now they have a promo code for $10 off when you spend $25. You can still save money and live an all-natural lifestyle!
