As we head into a jam-packed holiday season, it’s a good idea to start budgeting for the additional expenses that’ll surely come our way. Travel, gift, and impulse cookie purchases can make anyone freak out. Since racking up bills is frightening enough, we thought we’d help you have a Halloween that’s not-so-scary. There are lots of thrifty ways to get your ghoul on and escape a little from those everyday realities that can be spooky enough. One way is movie night! From cheap Amazon rentals to free films with your Netflix subscription, you’ll be set. Throw on your comfy pants, turn down the lights, and break open that bag of candy you bought just for you. (Come on, you know it’s true.)

Here are our top-seven classic picks for movie marathoning that won’t kill your budget:

1. Scream

One intense thriller that people always remember is “Scream.” You’ll see popular actors in 90s attire, lots of suspense, and, well, screams. As soon as you watch the eerie opening scene, you’ll be hooked.

2. Misery

True to its Stephen King-ness, “Misery” is flat-out horrifying. Though we think she’s a very nice lady in real life, Kathy Bates is not to be messed with in this menacing movie. We’re not kidding. She’s your book club’s worst nightmare.

3. 28 Days Later

If you’re into “The Walking Dead” (and British accents), you’ll be on the edge of your seat with this fast-paced, zombie-esque story. Scaredy-cats beware…it’s pretty darn spine-chilling and just might keep you up all night.

4. Gremlins

Those of us who love our fur babies (and the 80s) will be drawn to “Gremlins.” Though, watch out. Sometimes cute critters can wreak a whole lot of havoc.

5. The Good Son

“Home Alone” star, Macaulay Culkin, does a superbly sinister job in “The Good Son.” Seriously, it’s been years, and we’re still scarred. He’s so good that you won’t want to be anywhere alone with this devilish dude.

6. Poltergeist

Some of us remember “Poltergeist” from our childhoods. Why were we allowed to watch this insanely terrifying movie as kids? We’re still wondering that ourselves. If you haven’t seen this one since middle school or just want to know what the fuss is all about, go back in time and check this horror story out.

7. The Sixth Sense

If you’re looking for a scary flick that’ll also touch your heart, “The Sixth Sense” should be on your list. Young Haley Joel Osment kills it so well with his incredible acting prowess, that you just might forget how creeped out you are. (We lie. You’ll be freaked out…and you’ll love every minute of it!)

Now, enough of the Internet! It’s show-time, ghouls and ghoulfriends! Treat yourself, stay safe, be kind to each other, and have a blast this Halloween. Actually, do this all year long, and the world will be a more boo-tiful place.
