Now that the ghosts, goblins and ghouls have had their fill of candy, it's time to start cozying up to the idea of Thanksgiving. If you're tired of the same old menu, the frantic shopping trips, or the hassle of travel, switch things up this year. Finding fresh new ways (and budget friendly, to boot) to celebrate the holiday will rejuvenate your spirit, without damaging your wallet.

Volunteer

As we give thanks this holiday for the abundance that is ours, there is no better time to help others who may be struggling. After all, giving is at the very core of this holiday. Seek out your local food banks, shelters or non-profits and help with food preparation, or meal serving. Team up with family or friends and get in the spirit. Gather your loved ones and create gift baskets to take to local shelters. Visit senior centers and spend some time getting to know the older members of your community who may be feeling alone this holiday season. These activities have a low to zero price tag, and will be doing a great deal of good for you and the world around you. You can't beat that!

Change up Your Menu: Choose a New Theme

If you're looking to take a break from the traditional turkey and trimmings, have some fun this year and go with a whole new theme. Take this opportunity to explore authentic cuisines from around the world.

Have fun doing research and making it your own. Who knows, maybe this will be a new tradition you will have for years to come, with a new cuisine theme each year.

Run it Out!

There's nothing more invigorating than a Thanksgiving run. Even better? Gather your friends, family, neighbors and do your local Turkey Trot. These are usually 5k or less runs and are a great way to get out and appreciate your community and its beauty. Then you'll really earn that second helping of pie. Check your local news listings, or hop on Run Sign Up to find a race near you.

Host a Potluck

Thanksgiving can be a rough time of year for many. Seek out others who may be alone for the holiday, and create your own festive potluck gathering. Ask each person to bring a dish that holds some meaning for them, and exchange stories (or recipes!) about each one.

Head to a National Park

Get out and be thankful for the great outdoors at your favorite National Park. Pack a picnic, take a moment, and breathe in some new air. Bring family, friends, neighbors, or take some time for yourself.

Stay-cation in your Jammies

Maybe this year it's just you and your significant other, or your roommate. Stay cozy in your jammies and have someone else do the cooking. Markets such as Whole Foods offer a wide assortment of Thanksgiving dishes for easy takeout. Bingewatch Netflix, put your feet up, and enjoy some yummy foods all without having to clean the kitchen.

Have a safe, happy and abundant Thanksgiving, and have fun with some new traditions this year.
