Putting the Lids on This Week's Tip Jars: September 12, 2014

Happy Friday! We hope that you all had a great week. For most across the country, this week is one of reflection and remembrance. 13 years may have pasted since the fateful day of the September 11 attacks, but we will never forget that day. Know that our thoughts are with everyone who lost their lives and loved ones as a result of that tragedy. Take the weekend and enjoy the time you have with your family and loved ones. You will not regret it! Also catch up on this week's tip jars below, so that you can save yourself some time and money while you are unloading from the long week.

Faster is not always better, especially when it comes to filling up your gas tank. Instead of speeding through while at the pump, only fill up on the lowest speed. You can feel the speed clicks when you hold down the pump. By filling up slower, you are reducing the chance of air getting into your tank, therefore getting more for your money.

We all want to hold onto a little bit more of summer while we can. If you are anything like me, that means you want to hold onto your highlights. If you are not interested in running to the salon to start touching up your roots already just accessorize your hair. The best way to hide your roots is by adding a headband or scarf to your every day look. This will hide where your highlights and roots meet; therefore letting you go longer between touch-ups. It is also a great way to add a pop of color to your outfit.

Painting your home yourself can save a significant amount of money, but if you are painting and living in the home at the same time, that smell can get extremely uncomfortable. Instead of living through the torture, just add some vanilla extract to your paint. The rule of thumb is to add a tablespoon of vanilla to every gallon of paint. It will neutralize the smell and will not affect the paint in anyway. You will also save yourself any money that you would need to spend to get rid of the smell after painting.

Candles are an amazing addition to any room because they can completely transform the vibe with just one strike of a match. If you don’t have the extra cash to drop on a real candle, just use an orange. Cut the orange in half and scoop out the center, leaving a core-like stem in the middle. Then fill the orange with cooking oil to just below the stem. Light the stem and it should burn for hours! Orange fragrance will freshen up any room in a matter of no time.

Cookies make the world a happy place. If you are a fan of baking your own cookies and storing them, give this trick a shot to keep them soft and chewy for longer. Once you store them in their container or tin, place a piece of white bread on top. The bread will soak up any moisture in the container and keep the cookies fresher longer. If the bread hardens before you finish the tin, if that is even possible, just replace it with another piece. This will be a lifesaver during holiday season!

Have a fantastic weekend savvy savers!

xoxo Shannon
