Putting the Lids on This Week's Tip Jars: June 6, 2014

By Shannon Hanrahan  •  June 06, 2014

We are now in the full swing of June meaning schools are getting out, weather is getting even nicer, and vacation plans are being finalized. We don’t know about you, but we can definitely tell that summer is around the corner. Not only are the streets of Santa Monica just a tab bit busier these days, but also the stores are celebrating with crazy sales! Hopefully you have been taking advantage, if not check out all of the offers we have available on our site. They are definitely not ones to miss. In addition, we are currently a giveaway for a $75 gift card to Kohl’s. You can get everything on your wish list in one fail swoop.

Don’t you just love that hotel fluffy feeling when you first bring home a new pillow? I know I do, but then slowly but surely my pillows fall flat. Instead of going out to the store and buying something new, grab two clean tennis balls and put them in the dryer with your pillows for a full cycle. This should bring the life and fluff back into your favorite bedtime accessory. Tennis balls are next to nothing compared to new pillows so this will help you stay on top of your budget!

Especially with the season of AC coming, we want to watch that we are not consuming unnecessary energy and spiking our bills for the summer. Instead of always turning to the oven to cook your meals, use an electric skillet, broiler oven, or toaster oven. These use half the amount of energy and are perfect for the smaller meals. Your wallet will thank you when the energy bill comes out.

This is a trick that my roommate actually just shared with me because we are constantly making soup and buying broth and stock. She always spends less than me, and it is attributed to buying the stock/broth in cubes rather than the cans or boxes. You can typically buy a larger quantity for less money. This is perfect when you cook a ton of soup like I do. What I like as well is that it takes up less room in my cabinet. So I am saving money and storage. It is really a win-win situation.

Tis the season of lighter fashion colors, which means that stains are only more apparent when they occur. Do not make the mistake of trying to rub out the stain on your favorite outfit. Not only will this exacerbate the stain but it may also ruin your clothes forever. Instead of rubbing, blot each side of the stain with an absorbent towel and then wash as directed. This will remove all of the excess liquid and hopefully make the stain easier to remove, instead of pushing it further into the fabric.

Now that school is out for many parts of the country, parents and babysitters may be looking for some fun activities to do with kids. Instead of going to your local gardening store and buying expensive bird feeders, just pick up birdseed and then make your own! Take a toilet paper roll and cover it in peanut butter and roll it in the birdseed. When it is ready, tie the roll where you want with a piece of string and watch the birds flock. This is inexpensive and a great seasonal activity!

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the great sales!
