Putting the Lids on This Week's Tip Jars: February 28, 2014

Happy Friday Everyone! It is a gloomy, rainy day in Santa Monica; pretty much the prefect weather to curl up and watch movies all day long. That is why we are so excited to be having our Oscar party today in celebration of the 86th Academy Awards this Sunday. Beautiful decorations, yummy barbeque food, and good company are all we can ask for to end this long and busy week! Don’t forget to check back with us next week to see the pictures from the event. March is officially here this weekend, which means that spring is coming! We know that many of you are probably counting down the minutes until you can say goodbye to the artic weather and seemingly never ending snowstorms. In addition, you can look forward to spring-cleaning and shopping and all of the sales that are associated with this time of year.

Going to the movies is expensive, but one way to save if you are a big movie buff is by following your favorite theaters on their social platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Many times, special offers, contest, and coupons will be posted on those sites and only available to their fans or followers. This way you will be supporting the businesses you visit and reaping the benefits as well!

Instead of always going to your local movie theater, switch it up and visit a drive-in theater or a movie in the park to cut expenses. Not only will it change up the location, but you can also bring your own food and drinks instead of having to eat popcorn and candy. It can be a fun event where you meet friends and family to catch up and enjoy a night outside, especially in the summer!

Be aware of discounts that your theater offers, whether you are a senior, student, or military personnel. This way you can plan your movie trip accordingly and get a great deal. Also check if your theater has matinee prices because even though they may be earlier, you cannot beat the price. If you are able to get a discount, that will leave more money for popcorn and drinks!

The candy and soda from the concession stand are very tempting, but if you don’t want to drop an additional $20 on top of your movie tickets, try going to the theater on a full stomach. If you eat dinner before you go and bring a small snack, if you theater allows, then you can confidently walk by the stand on your way to your seats. It is healthier and will save you money.

The ultimate way to save money at the movies is to just not go out. If you can host a movie night at home, then you won’t have to spend the $12 or more per ticket and be tempted by the unhealthy expensive movie theater snacks. This way, you can use your money on a nice dinner or special occasion, and then rent a movie at Redbox or stream one. You may not be seeing the most up-to-date movies, but there are still great options available.

Please have a fantastic and safe weekend!
